What Happens During a Dental Checkup?
Your “cleaning appointment” is about more than just having your smile polished. While fresher, brighter teeth are a benefit of your regular teeth cleaning, we’ll also be completing several important steps to keeping your smile cavity-free, including:
Professional Cleaning — A prophylactic teeth cleaning is something that’s designed to help you keep your smile healthy and delay the onset of gum disease. Even if you have great brushing and flossing habits, most people are prone to having tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas. Scheduling a cleaning every six months can help you keep your natural teeth for the rest of your life.
Dental Exam — During your appointment, Dr. Cambre will examine your teeth, existing dental work, soft tissues, and evaluate your mouth for changes since your last dental checkup. Should you require treatment, we’ll review which options are available to choose from. If you have specific concerns or questions, he will be happy to discuss them with you!
Digital X-rays — High resolution imaging allows us to pinpoint oral health concerns that aren’t visible during a visual exam. Our Slidell family dentist looks for things like tooth decay, dental abscesses, impacted wisdom teeth, gum disease, and more.
Fluoride Treatments — This natural mineral strengthens teeth to help them resist acid erosion and decay. It’s helpful for adults with tooth sensitivity, children wearing braces or anyone at an increased risk of cavities. We recommend fluoride after most preventative teeth cleaning. If you have questions about the safety of fluoride, please talk with Dr. Cambre.
Oral Cancer Screening — We screen everyone for oral cancer during their regular checkup. Because this disease is so deadly if not caught early enough, this crucial exam could save your life. We know that everything from certain viruses and sun exposure to alcohol and tobacco use can raise the risk of developing oral cancer or precancer, so regular screenings are vital.
Periodontal Evaluation — Did you know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss? Regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings can help, but we’ll still need to evaluate your gum tissues to pinpoint infection early when it’s easier to treat.
